One of the newest party trends right now are birthday cake pops. It seems like everywhere I turn lately there are cake pops. They are at the coffee shop I visit on a regular basis. People pop up on Facebook and Twitter saying they are baking them.

Today I would like to talk about how to make cake pops, share a few of my favorite designs out there, and what tools and things you will need. While I am not sure who gets credit for creating the first cake pop, probably one of the most famous bloggers out there to feature them is Bakerella.

Basically you will need:

  • a baked cake (use your favorite recipe or cake mix and bake as a sheet cake or round, any type pan will work)
  • frosting (again use your favorite recipe or a can of frosting)
  • wax paper
  • Lollipop Sticks
  • candy melts
  • styrofoam block
  • sprinkles

Basically you crumble up the cake, add the frosting, mix together and then form into the desired shape. Put them on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper and then melt the chocolate coating. Add some to the end of a lollipop stick and insert into the cake. Put in the freezer for a bit until they are firm. Then dip in the melted chocolate and then add sprinkles if desired. Stick into the styrofoam block to dry.

There are a number of cake pop books to learn more about different styles and recipes. I love this Cake Pops book by Bakerella cause her design are awesome and the book itself if spiral bound, making it so much more baker friendly. You can get it from Amazon, who has the best price I have seen for it.

Of course if you don’t want to make your own, the best classiest party favor company out there is able to help you out. They make really adorable brownie cake pops that you can personalize to fit your birthday party. Their picture is at the top of this post and they have a number of other designs to choose from too.

Have you made cake pops for a party before? What are your favorite designs? Would love to know in the comments below.
